When I first heard that blogging would be a part of my 4th year life in college, I admit that I was scared and somehow paranoid (haha:) because I thought that it would be hard for someone at my age to write productively. But because of the unwavering support of my prof..(Ma'am Jenaisle)- (I really want to mention her as a way of showing my gratitude) well, I can say that blogging is the other way around. It's fun and that it helped me discover more about myself:) please continue reading as I impart my blogging journey...

1. You'll become an INSTANT PROFESSIONAL RESEARCHER!
google.com

This was the first task I fell in love with(**,). Why? because in blogging ORIGINALITY matters. You have to read several books and analyzed them to come up with an original research of yours.Because of blogging, its not only you who learn but also you help the younger generation. Because of your quality research you help our educators to feed curious minds and believe it or not you help this world to become better: place)- not mentioning this skill will help you on your future job

2. C-R-E-A-T-I-V-E ME!

google.com

Every time we are task to write a blog about science, like toxicology.. the first thing that pop up in my mind is  how will I present the ideas that I want to learn.. In blogging you'll discover in yourself that as God created this world with creativity and so are you. I mean he put in you a gene for "generativity ". Because in blogging you'll be able to edit the type of text.. the format of your blog, put pictures/ valid videos.. etc.  with blogging, your world will be painted with colors and fun and this world will be a happier place:)

3. Principle of "THINK BEFORE YOU CLICK"
google.com
In blogging, responsible posting of ideas is a disciplined that everyone needs to learn. You can either help or destroy life because of what you post. Sometimes, you may even end up sued in the court because its either you steal other's intellectual property (plagiarism) or you posted destructive lies about them and with that instead of making this a better world, you just added another chaos to be solved:(.. but we can avoid these things if we will practice the saying  "think before we click". Also sharing our personal information should be limited for us to be safe and so we will not end up in traumatic blogging but as to be happy bloggers of our generation.

google.com
Well, just like the sun is rising and so I think with my blogging life. My blogging journey is just starting. I know and I hope that I will learn more as the days, months and years pass.. This is just a beginning of me sharing my life in world through the internet. I am very thankful that in every post I make, I know I am able to help. Blogging gives a person an opportunity to live a purpose driven life:) so why not start today and be that fruitful person-just  like what God has always wanted us to be:)

Healthy Dose of Toxicology... In HIM I Only Depend

Taking a glimpse from the rich and well-off  history of toxicology, a noted renaissance botanist, alchemist, astrologer and physician, named Paracelsus once quoted that...

"All things are poisons, for there is nothing without poisonous qualities, it is only the right dose that differentiate a poison from a remedy"

In his movie John Carter drank POISON
of puffer fish to stimulate death
and be able to trick everyone that he's dead.

Having said that, as a young seeker of truth and knowledge, I believed on what he quoted. Today, we are  living in a world of chemicals. According to Katsung K.G. Basic and Clinical Pharmacology, it is estimated that more than 60,000 chemicals are in common use and about 500 new chemicals are said to enter the commercial market annually and for us to be safe, one needs to know how these exogenous substances can be utilized by society without being hazardous to its members and the environment. And so we should have a healthy dose of TOXICOLOGY.

TOXICOLOGY AND ITS SUBDIVISIONS

Toxicology is  the branch of science that is concerned with the adverse effects of chemical and physical agents on all living system. In biomedical world, toxicology on the other hand extensively deals with the study of how can drugs be safely use for humans the demonstration of safety or hazard associated with the use of these drugs.

To have more of these, lets take a moment for this video:

Toxicology, from myths and superstition has now flourished and understood to have greater importance than how it was first found. In many aspects of modernity, it has its own reserves that makes it equally significant with molecular biology, anatomy physiology and other sciences. Toxicology has different branches. Let’s study them one by one:

  Clinical Toxicology

It’s of great importance for the clinical area.It is the study of diagnosis, prognosis and the management of poisoning for the clinical environment.

   Forensic Toxicology
It deals on the application of well studied techniques for the rightful analysis of biological samples of study for the presence of drugs and toxic substances. Has great importance in the law enforcement setting.
Occupational Toxicology
Helps to identify the chemicals that may be harmful in the workplace, define drug’s safety use and harmful amounts.

Environmental Toxicology
It deals with the potentially injurious effects of man-made chemicals on wildlife and humans.

Regulatory Toxicology
It is the collection, processing and examining experimental and epidemiological data of toxicology. Regulatory toxicology scientifically helps in the protection of human by studying toxicology effects based on recorded information

Ecotoxicology

Deals with the distribution of drugs in the environment and the toxic effects of this chemical and physical agents on a population in a confine ecosystem.

  Food Toxicology

The science of studying bioactive substances that occur on the food we eat. It assess effects of components of chemical matrix on our diet and the toxic agents or contaminating agents that may be introduce on food handling.

Aside from the application of toxicology on different field of sciences, it is also important in studying substance of abuseThese are substances which are taken in large amount and may lead to dependency and psychological problems. To have more of this you can see it by clicking here. Does your friends ask you to stop using any drug or of like? but every time you encounter this substance in mind you simply feel you are drawn to it and it has power over you? If so, (or even just for a random check-your-self) you can  test yourself on the link below,if  you are confuse or in denial on being under a substance of abuse: Am I An ADDICT?

-There you have it.:) Guys kindly bare in mind that all things are good, only and only if they are sustain in a delicate balance. Too much or less of what is right is bad. And for enrichment of our soul let us always remember that our body is the temple of God so let us be careful in everything that we put in it. From clothes, earrings, accessories to foods, beverages and drugs. Hope you learned not just intellectually but also for the goodness of you soul:). And if ever, It's never too late. The good news is
OF ALL THINGS IN THIS WORLD, ONLY IN HIM WE CAN SURELY DEPEND. In God, we can find restoration and renewal. watch this heart touching music: I didn't know my own strenght by Whitney Houston

Have a great day! Thank you so much for reading:) GOD BLESS YOU!<3

ABC's of Endocrinology

I AM HUNGRY!!

Have you ever wondered what happens to the food we eat (e.g. sugar, rice, meat)?Like how are they converted to simple substances, regulated and absorbed by our bodies? How about our body's mechanism against stress, change in temperature, formation of free radicals and even infections?Or what are the principal actions of our body as it responds to the alteration in fluid balance, electrolyte concentrations, blood pressure or glucose availability?
Everyday millions of biochemical processes occur in our body. Most of these processes happen "para-sympathetically" or unconsciously.
http://wisesyracuse.wordpress.com

To answer the questions above, understanding and studying a part of our system named the Endocrine system would be of great help.
But first let us define the branch of science which deals with it : The ENDOCRINOLOGY.
The etymology of endocrinology is from the Greek word "endo" which means within, "krino" meaning to separate and "logia", the study of. And so, " Endocrinology is the study of the intra- and also the extra-cellular interaction of the chemical messengers termed "hormones" as well as the tissue or glands that produces them and how these hormones affects the tissue it acted upon"

This image simply illustrates steroid molecules are
being released by steroid hormone which diffuse in
the capillary walls in able to reach  a target cell membrane

Endocrine system is composed of several glands which directly secretes hormones into the bloodstreams. This is the basic differentiation of endocrine from exocrine because exocrine glands secretes hormones via duct. Although there is a gland which is in between like the pancreas since it secretes hormones on both ways.

The classical paradigm of an endocrine system consists of a hormone produced by a certain gland into the circulation and then it will bind into a specific receptor of its target tissue and then the presence of the hormone will initiate systemic reactions and biochemical change of the cellular nature.

Let's take a look with "HORMONES"...

Glands and their Hormonescheck this for summary
http://www.as.miami.edu/

Hormones, according to literature are chemical messengers from a gland to a specific target site to cause a series of process of biochemical reactions. Generally, hormones are produced by a specific gland released into the bloodstream and carried to the site of action and will cause a biochemical process.

Classification and Functions of Hormones
Chemical messengers can be classified according to their structure or  hormone according to tissue at which they are produced or click here.

These hormones are of great importance and that they are one of the reason why do we need to study the endocrine system. Note that the following are the functions of hormones:
  1. Hormones act to stabilize the acute changes that happens in the body's internal environment
  2.  Hormones controls the storage and utilization of the energy by the body
  3. Hormones are important in the regulation of normal growth and development
  4. Hormones are essential for reproduction.
Any irregularity in endocrine system may lead to different diseases. To know these diseases you can watch the video below: ROLL THE VIDEO!

*Endocrinology is a broad field of clinical science but I hope that  I was able to share the basic and essential facts  about it and that we both learned and gained knowledge from this blog. Please subscribe, comment below and check out my upcoming educational blogs about clinical chemistry. Remember no one is too young or too old to learn:)God bless guys!

To GOD be all the Glory!
